10/365 Ways to Simplify Your (Work) Life
ADULTING.(n): The practice of behaving in a way characteristic of a responsible adult, especially the accomplishment of mundane but necessary tasks.(C)
One of the books that I just finished reading is '365 Ways to Simplify Your Work Life' by Odette Pollar. It may look like a small, ordinary book but it's quite a good read. I know, the title of the book was really meant to simplify your ways on how to be a successful professional with your work life, but as I was reading the book, I learned that the lessons that you may get from this one not only can help you with your career, but also in life as well.
Some of its content is quite outdated now as it was originally published back in 1996. But despite this, most of it can still be applied to the current time and is also helpful to individuals who are starting out their careers.
Here are my Top 10 items on the book:
Yes, little one, not everyone is perfect. Including you. Sometimes, our words can cut like a double-edged sword. While this can be tough for some, no one has really died yet in admitting that they were wrong. And making mistakes are inevitable in life. We may regret some of our decisions along the way, but we must learn to accept and learn from it as we go through life.
There will be a LOT of setbacks in life, but we must learn how to rise up from it and work towards the main goal. The journey may be tough, but all of the sacrifices are definitely worth it in the end.
This is one of my favorite mantras when I was in college: "If Plan A fails, remember that you always have 25 letters left." No matter how hard the situation may be, there will always be another way to reach your goal.
I had to learn this one the hard way. Yes, in order to be successful, we must learn how to work hard. But it is always better to take time for yourself and enjoy the fruits of your hard work.
The secret to get this one done is to get a notebook and write down all the things that you want to accomplish. Now, narrow down that list into your short term and your long term goals and get rid of the things that are not relevant to your goals. I know that this is easier said than done, but this is just one among the things that can be our turning points to be a more responsible citizen of the world.
This can be applicable to any situation wether it may be with your significant other, family, friends, and even your job. We must learn to know our value and let go of the things that do not add to this.
In my previous job, I was already promoted as one of the managers in the museum that I was working at. I was working my butt off almost 24/7, giving my 100% every single day, and literally almost got nothing in return. Sure, there's this "title" attached to my name and I loved every minute my job, but it was too much. I had to weigh my situation if I should continue to deal with the crap that I was getting in order to retain my position or just let go and live a peaceful life. I chose the latter, and it was definitely one of the best decisions that I've ever made in my life.
At this day and age, everything and everyone seems to be in a rush all the time. Sometimes, we don't get to focus on ourselves and give our bodies its much-needed TLC. We tend to be super focused with our workload and this leaves our bodies and souls stressed. Later on, this could result into burnout and we do not want that. It's nice to take things slow from time to time and breathe.
We all have our insecurities in a lot of things and we all tend compare our own journeys to someone else's. We forget how to give credit to ourselves on how far we've reached in life. We may doubt ourselves and these insecurities can hinder us from accomplishing most in life. Sure, it's nice to be reminded that we're going on the right track, or we're doing the right thing, but at the end of the day, all we have to do is just believe that we're capable in doing great things and give our best shot.
Life is never full of sunshine and rainbows, and the only constant thing in this world is change. Whether we like this or not, things will change through time. But this is also the beauty of life. You may be at your lowest right now, but things will change and it will get better. It may be hard to understand right now, but life goes on and there no other way to go but up. We just have to keep the faith that things will change and there are greater things to come.
